Sutton High School

Campus-wide improvements designed to enhance teaching, sports, dining and sixth form facilities, while addressing space constraints, sustainability goals and growing local demand for school places.

Project brief

Sutton High School brought forward a programme of strategic campus improvements designed to enhance the school’s educational and sports facilities, address existing spatial constraints, improve sustainability credentials and support pupil wellbeing.

The scheme also increased the school’s capacity, helping to respond to growing local demand for school places.

Scope of works
New sixth form building
Extension to the existing refectory building
Infill extension to the existing junior school building
New two-storey prep school extension
New sports changing facilities
New multi-use games area
Nexus role

Nexus was involved in proposals for a new sixth form building, forming the final phase of the wider campus redevelopment.

The building was proposed on the site of three existing buildings. As the scheme involved demolition, Nexus helped prepare a robust evidence base to demonstrate that the existing buildings were no longer fit for purpose and that the proposed sixth form facility would deliver a high-quality, sustainable and future-focused educational environment.

Pre-application strategy Early engagement helped test the planning position and shape the route through the process.
Evidence base Planning evidence supported the case for demolition and redevelopment of buildings no longer fit for purpose.
Resident consultation Public consultation was undertaken due to the site’s close proximity to neighbouring residential properties.
Transport engagement Ongoing pre-application discussions were held with Transport for London because of the proposed new access point onto the TfL road network.
Sport England Temporary accommodation on the existing tennis courts required careful consultation and pre-application engagement with Sport England.
Application phasing The proposals were split into separate applications to help streamline lower-risk elements and respond to construction timeframes.
Outcome

The project helped Sutton High School progress a coordinated programme of improvements to its teaching, sixth form, dining, prep school, junior school and sports facilities.

The proposals supported better use of a constrained campus, improved the quality and sustainability of the school environment, and helped the school respond to local demand for places.
